HISTORY

Gaya is a historic city with a documented Buddhist history reaching back to the sixth century BCE when the sage Gautama Buddha acquired enlightenment and became the Buddha at Bodh Gaya, 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) from the contemporary city. Gaya got invaded by the Ghaznavid Empire's Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khilji in the 12th century CE. Gaya became a part of the Mughal Empire in 1557 and remained under the beginning of British control till 1764. In 1947, Gaya, like the rest of the country, declared independence.

POPULATION

The Gaya had a population of 470,839 people, according to the 2011 census. The Gaya Municipal Corporation, Kaler (Out Growth), and Paharpur are all part of the Gaya Urban Agglomeration (Census Town). They had a population of 468,614, with 247,572 men and 221,042 women. There were 59,669 children under the age of five. The female to male ratio was 986 to 1000. The population aged seven and up had an 85.74 percent literacy rate.
